Goodbye, Wild One

Nights are long and dark now. Deer are frisky. Animals moving at all hours. The perpetual animal/car conflict. It sucks. I've been having a bad run lately. I know these blogs are best if they are fun and optimistic. Well, life isn't always that way. In the big picture roadkill is a minor issue. But every night when I'm behind the wheel in this season I'm not thinking it's minor anymore. Too many memories. I just gotta journal about it and move on.

Don't worry. I won't leave you in a downer funk for long. My next post will be more lighthearted, even if it deals with yet another frustration of mine.

I sympathize. . . I absolutely hate it when I hit field mice!! You are correct, it's just another one of those sad statistics when man moves into animal territory.

I understand, John, I'd be sad, too. I haven't hit an animal myself, but see plenty of roadkill on our backroads..and some major roads...this time of year. It especially hurts to see the deer and foxes. You've had more than your share of these incidences, it seems.

I'm so sorry. That is what happens when we now live so much closer to nature. I saw some deer about 20 ft away from the hills I walk in the other day. When it gets dry they come down into human inhabitation for food and water. Beautiful, majestic creatures...

A grueling as driving around this time of year might be...your illustration serves a bigger purpose...another entry well done...

John, that is very sad.
I was driving in your area yesterday (on the way to sketch crawl with Kate Johnson) and we came close to hitting a coyote as he tried to eat something dead on the road.
I have a special love for bobcats -- my Maine Coon cat is often mistaken for one by silly people.
Funny -- game experts around El Dorado swear that there ARE no bobcats in Kansas anymore.

Well I am glad you vented out your frustations. I am sorry this had to happen to you. But at least you have sympathy unlike some. I don't have that problem where I live now, but growing up in Wisconsin this time of year was horrid. My dad hit a deer head on with his bike. The same bike that I had posted on my blog earlier. Dad spent a month in the hospital and the bike took years to rebuild. Not sure what happened to that deer. So please be safe!

Thanks for all your comments. I can tell this is a shared experience, and am grateful my sketch could communicate that.
-vickylw: It is the mountain lion that the game experts deny exist in Kansas. My neighbors & I laugh, since sitings aren't rare for us.
-starr: I can't imagine hitting a deer with a motorcycle! Glad it didn't scare him away from cycles. And your sketch of the drive-around with your Dad wouldn't look the same from a car.

Sorry to hear about the bobcat but this is a very nice tribute to him. Don't worry about posting the sad parts of life. When thing like this don't bother you anymore....well, now that would be really sad.

John - I didn't know you had bobcats in Kansas! And I'm from there. I live in the foothills in Colorado in the city and we have deer that get hit all the time. Luckily I haven't hit one yet, knock on wood. I can totally understand, it is sad. Marva
