That Time Again

Time to carve a pumpkin. The kids aren't here anymore but I have the urge to carve one, anyway. I had quite a few years when the kids were teenagers when I didn't carve. Enough of that abstinence! Can't blame it on the kids anymore, either. It's just me.There's still a bit of pyromaniac in me, too, to enjoy just sitting and watching the candle burn. It's soothing. Then, to sketch it while I quietly watch it is just frosting on the cake!

I once taught pumpkin carving when we lived in Great Bend, at the Recreation Commission. Kids loved it! When we moved to Topeka, I offered to teach it at the Recreation Commission here. They turned me down, because they didn't see any reason to offer it. I don't get them not getting it.

So now it's just me, carving for me. And that's good enough.

The pumpkin will rot but your picture will stay with you always. Great way to capture something temporary.

This is great John - lovely carving, and you really get a sense of the calm and flickering light. I felt quite soothed and relaxed just reading your description of the process. Hope the candy was good :)

What a lovely post. Your pumpkin is wonderful and the explanation as to why you chose the ship is moving. Hope you got your favorite candy! We live in the country too so no kids on Halloween ... I miss 'em! nancy

Well, the Rec Commission missed out on a good class, I would think, judging from this example. I'm so glad you decided to sketch your carving and share it with us!

I would have thought the rec commission would have jumped at the chance to have you teach. Here, they're always trying to get teachers. Maybe you should teach it here. Your mileage wouldn't be that bad would it? Ha! Anyway, I like your sketch. I don't think I've ever carved a pumpkin.
