Fruit of the Land

Fruit time! We have plenty of blackberries now. And two trees of peaches. Kansas peaches. Doesn't have the rich sound of Georgia peaches, but they are ours. These are dwarf fruit trees. We didn't need big ones, just smaller ones to give us some fruit to play with. Right now it seems more like work than play. The blackberry bushes are taking over the world. They sprawl a little more every year. Every three days I go out to pick more. It's been over a week of that, and with the red fruit on the vines it looks like another week of picking. Time to start canning and freezing.

What a delightful page! I can really relate - we have some fruit trees and berries in our backyard out here in California. We just finished with the apricots, peaches, plums, and berries -- and now it is time for nectarines. My husband picked LOTs of nectarines today off of our 'dwarf tree'. Wonderful fruit, but like you said - lots of work too.

Enjoy your harvest as well as your memories!

Beautiful page, John! My favorite time of year - the picking and preserving! Enjoy!

Yep, growing your own anything is a lot of work, but worth it. Maybe it's less work than biking across the state! Great journal entry.... happy freezing, canning and eating! nancy

Oh yum! Blackberry jam! Oh this sounds so fun! I may have to give this a try! I wonder if blackberry bushes would survive the winter here? And the bears? :D

love your blog - I'm afraid if I had to sell my blackberries I'd go poor fast - bugs- birds - who knows neighbors kids- neighbors - all I know is the tiny handfuls I've been able to pick I am not squandering or sharing but the few berries I've had are sun-kissed & so sweet- I suppose for jam you need more a handful?- for a technical guy you are also a delightful & good artist- thanks so much for sharing-
